<p class="question">I saw your column last week saying Apple&#8217;s MobileMe now does a better job of syncing contacts, calendar items and email. But will it allow me to sync to my iPhone directly from my company&#8217;s corporate calendar, address books and email?</p>
<p> MobileMe is meant for consumer data, not corporate data. Essentially, Apple&#8217;s own servers act like a company&#8217;s servers in order to bring corporate-style push syncing to consumer data that isn&#8217;t kept on corporate servers. To sync your corporate contacts, calendar items and email to an iPhone, you would use a different built-in option in the iPhone: Microsoft Exchange. Assuming your company&#8217;s IT department certifies the iPhone as an acceptable device, and your company uses Exchange, as many or most do, you can use an iPhone to perform instant two-way syncing of corporate contacts, calendar and email. It works just like a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile phone in this scenario. I have tested this, and found it worked well.</p>
<p class="question">Is it possible to sync a Treo or BlackBerry using MobileMe? If not, how can I transfer my Treo contacts and calendar items to the iPhone?</p>
<p>While MobileMe is agnostic when it comes to computer platforms, working on both Windows and Macintosh computers, it is single-minded when it comes to handheld devices. It synchronizes data only to Apple&#8217;s own iPhones and iPod Touch devices. It doesn&#8217;t work with the Treo, the BlackBerry, or any other smart phone or handheld device beyond those made by Apple. One simple way to move contacts and appointments from Treo to iPhone is to use Outlook as an intermediary. First, sync your Treo to Outlook. Then, just plug your iPhone into your PC, launch iTunes, and sync the iPhone with Outlook. The data from your Treo should then be on the iPhone. MobileMe isn&#8217;t required.</p>
<p class="question">I can&#8217;t find the location of the files contained in my Personal folders in Outlook that contain my contacts and saved emails. Can you help?</p>
<p>To find the location of the single combined Outlook data file that contains your email, contacts and calendar, follow these steps. First, select &#8220;Data File Management&#8221; from the File menu. A window will open showing the name of your data file, which includes its location on your hard disk. Click the button to the right that says &#8220;Open Folder,&#8221; and you will be in the folder that contains this file, with the file&#8217;s name or icon highlighted. Outlook data files use the extension &#8220;pst&#8221; at the ends of their names.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>Do you still recommend the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119872156676051933.html" rel="external">Dell XPS One all-in-one computer</a> that you favorably reviewed last December? I am not a techie at all but need to replace my 5-year-old Dell and was interested in an all-in-one.</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Yes. In fact, I now own two of these Dell XPS Ones and use them as my Vista desktop computers, at home and in the office. I still believe, as I wrote in my review, that this Dell&#8217;s hardware is superior to that of the competing Apple iMac, though the Vista operating system is inferior to Apple&#8217;s. And the base XPS One now costs the same as the base iMac &#8212; $1,199 &#8212; instead of $300 more, as it did last year. So, if you want the Windows operating system, and like the look and convenience of an all-in-one desktop, I still favor the XPS One. <p class="question"> <em>Will Apple&#8217;s new MacBooks and MacBook Pros run Windows directly without an intervening &#8220;virtual machine&#8221; program like Parallels or Fusion?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Yes. All Apple Macs running the current Leopard operating system, including the new laptops, come with the ability to directly run Windows XP or Vista. Using Apple&#8217;s built-in &#8220;Boot Camp&#8221; feature, you can start up the computer in Windows, instead of the Mac&#8217;s own operating system, which turns the Mac into a pure Windows machine, with no trace of the Mac operating system running. The upsides of this approach are maximum Windows speed, and compatibility with the most graphics-intensive Windows programs, including games. Note that, to run Windows on a Mac, you must obtain and install a fresh, boxed, full version of XP or Vista. Apple doesn&#8217;t supply Windows.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I have a Yahoo email account, and wonder if Yahoo allows receipt and storage of email directly via a computer email program, such as Outlook, or is it all Web storage? Can you do both?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Yes. Yahoo offers a &#8220;Plus&#8221; option, for $20 a year, that permits users to receive and store their Yahoo email using a locally installed, instead of Web-based, email program. This approach does work with Microsoft Office, as well as many other local email programs. And you can still use Yahoo&#8217;s Web-based email interface at the same time. The Plus option also includes other benefits, including the elimination of ads and a doubling of the size limit on individual messages, to 20 megabytes.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>I need some help sending videos to others. It seems that every video I try to send in various ways is always too large. I&#8217;ve tried to use a program that works with Outlook to compress the email attachment, but it&#8217;s always still too large. Is there a solution other than uploading them onto YouTube or something similar?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> I suggest you try one of the services that specifically exist to transmit files that are too large for email. They typically work by having you upload the files to their servers, which, unlike YouTube, don&#8217;t expose them to the world. Seconds after you upload these files, your recipients receive an email that includes a specific link to the file you uploaded. The email is small because it includes only the link, not the file itself. The recipient clicks on the link, and the file is downloaded to his or her computer.</p>
<p>The service I use for this is called YouSendIt, and can be accessed at <a href="http://yousendit.com" rel="external">yousendit.com</a>. It works in all the major Web browsers, and on both Windows and Macintosh computers. The company has a free plan that covers files of up to 100 megabytes in size, and allows each file to be downloaded up to 100 times, or up to a gigabyte of total downloads each month. For $10 a month, you get a maximum file size of two gigabytes, 500 downloads per file, and a monthly maximum limit of 40 gigabytes.</p>
<p>In my experience, YouSendIt works well. It can be used directly from within a browser, or via a small program called YouSendIt Express, that lives on your computer and handles large files faster than the browser version does. YouSendIt also offers an Outlook plug-in that can automatically route large downloads via the service rather than through regular email, though I haven&#8217;t tested this plug-in.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>Our daughter is heading off to college this fall. She will be an art/graphic-design major, and the school recommended that she buy an Apple MacBook. I&#8217;m not sure if she should get what the college calls the &#8220;midlevel MacBook&#8221; or the &#8220;advanced MacBook.&#8221; The only differences are a slightly faster processor, a hard disk that is 40 gigabytes larger, and a &#8220;SuperDrive&#8221; for CDs and DVDs rather than a &#8220;Combo&#8221; drive. The price difference is $90. Which should we buy?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Either machine would be fine, and a lot depends on your budget, since college itself is of course very expensive. But I think, in this case, the extra $90 would be worth paying. This has nothing to do with the processor speed, which she probably wouldn&#8217;t even notice. But, if she is going to be creating a lot of graphics files, which can be large, the extra hard-disk space could be important.</p>
<p>The same goes for the CD/DVD drive options. The &#8220;SuperDrive&#8221; is Apple&#8217;s term for a drive that can create both DVDs and CDs, while the &#8220;Combo&#8221; drive can create only CDs. (Both drives can play both types of disks.) For someone who is producing large files, the ability to create DVDs can be handy, since DVDs have much higher capacities than CDs.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>My laptop has been infected by rogue viruses, posing as antispyware programs, that I can&#8217;t get rid of. When I go on Google, I find a number of sites that claim to offer free software that will get rid of them, but I am reluctant to download anything onto my machine from a source that I am not sure of. What&#8217;s a reliable program that will do that job?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> I would immediately buy a genuine, legitimate commercial antispyware program, install it and run it. The best ones I know of are Spyware Doctor by PC Tools, at <a href="http://pctools.com" rel="external">pctools.com</a>, and Spy Sweeper from Webroot, at <a href="http://Webroot.com" rel="external">Webroot.com</a>. Each costs $30, but that price can save you a lot of heartache.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>Does any PC manufacturer offer an option to order a Windows (MSFT) PC without any extra software preinstalled?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Dell&#8217;s XPS models can be ordered without most preloaded third-party software if you are very careful about clicking all the &#8220;no&#8221; options when ordering online. But you still are likely to find yourself with Dell&#8217;s (DELL) own sometimes annoying networking software.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I have two Windows machines, one for work and one for home. Both use Outlook for email. How can I best transfer many emails from the machine at work to the one at home and still be able to read them in Outlook &#8212; without forwarding them all?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Outlook has an &#8220;Import and Export&#8221; function that will allow you to export any of your email folders to, say, a transferable medium such as an external hard disk or flash drive. You can then take this removable medium to the home computer, plug it in, fire up Outlook, and then import the folder you had exported earlier at work. You can find these import and export functions under Outlook&#8217;s File menu.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>Can Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.0 coexist on the same computer?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Yes. In fact, you can have 2, 3, or 4 different Web browsers installed on the same personal computer, whether Windows or Mac (AAPL). You can even run different browsers simultaneously. For instance, as I type this, I am running IE 7, Firefox 3.0 and Safari 3.0 on the same computer at the same time.</p>
<p>The only slight hassle is that you will have to decide which to designate as the default browser, the one that launches when, say, you click on a link in an email.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>On TV, they announced a $40 government-issued coupon that is available to offset some of the cost of the new digital converter boxes we will need for our older television sets. How do I go about getting some?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> You can apply for a coupon at a federal government Web site designed expressly for that purpose: <a href="http://www.dtv2009.gov" rel="external">www.dtv2009.gov</a>. Or, you can call 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). Each household can receive up to two of the $40 coupons, which look like plastic gift cards, but they can&#8217;t be combined to purchase a single converter box. Each coupon must be applied to the purchase of a separate box, which the government estimates will cost between $50 and $70 at popular electronics stores. Coupons also must be used within 90 days of the date on which they are mailed to the consumer.</p>
<p>Note that these converter boxes won&#8217;t be needed for about a year, and aren&#8217;t necessary for TV sets containing digital tuners, also called an &#8220;ATSC&#8221; tuner. Such tuners have been included in many TV sets sold in the U.S. since 2004, even if they aren&#8217;t high definition televisions. Converter boxes also aren&#8217;t needed for older analog TV sets that receive their programs via cable or satellite services or other pay services. They are needed only for older analog TV sets that depend on free, over-the-air programming, the kind usually received via an indoor or outdoor antenna.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>Is it possible to transfer data from a computer with Windows 95 to a computer which uses Windows XP?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Yes, but the trick would be to figure out a medium for the transfer. Many, if not most, Windows 95 PCs don&#8217;t have USB ports, which rules out using a USB thumb drive or external USB hard disk as the transfer mechanism. If your old PC can burn CDs, that might be a good way to transfer your data.</p>
<p>Another option is buying a program like LapLink&#8217;s PCMover, which explicitly supports Windows 95 and can automate the process using either a network, removable media, or parallel cables. See laplink.com for details.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I&#8217;m thinking of getting an iPod Touch to replace both my iPod shuffle and Palm Pilot Vx. Does the Touch have as good address book and to-do functions as the Palm has? Does the Touch sync to the Mac&#8217;s Address Book, Mail, and Calendar software? If so, would it also sync to a Windows box?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> The iPod Touch, and its close cousin, the iPhone, do have what I consider to be a very good address book, or Contacts program, though it may not have all the same features you use on your Palm. And that address book can be easily synchronized with a computer.</p>
<p>On a Mac, the iPhone and Touch Contacts can be synced with the built-in Address Book, or with Entourage, Microsoft&#8217;s Outlook equivalent. On a Windows PC, it can be synced with Microsoft&#8217;s Outlook; with Outlook Express (Windows Address Book) in Windows XP; or with Windows Contacts in Windows Vista.</p>
<p>The calendar on the Touch and iPhone can be synchronized with the Mac&#8217;s built-in calendar, with the calendar in Entourage, and with the calendar in Outlook on a Windows PC.</p>
<p>However, neither the Touch nor the iPhone includes a true to-do or task function, and neither synchronizes email with a computer. They do have a good email program, but it is intended to work on its own, fetching and sending email directly, rather than copying email from a computer.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>When will Google offer its much-discussed cellphone for sale?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Google says it isn&#8217;t planning to build or sell mobile phones. Instead, it is developing a cellphone operating system, or software platform, called Android. And it has assembled an alliance of companies, including phone makers and cellular network providers, to create phones based on this new platform. This group is called the Open Handset Alliance. In addition, since Android will be so-called &#8220;open source&#8221; software, Google expects numerous developers around the world, large and small, to modify the operating system and create programs that will run on it.</p>
<p>If all goes according to plan, Google says it expects to see many different Android-based cellphones and other mobile devices, from a variety of manufacturers and carriers, in various designs and with differing functionality and capabilities. Some may be larger-screen &#8220;smart phones,&#8221; similar to an iPhone or BlackBerry. Others might be smaller, simpler phones. Still others might fall somewhere between an iPhone and a small laptop.</p>
<p>Google officials say they expect the first Android devices to be available later this year.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>After reading your Jan. 3 column, I looked unsuccessfully for a Home and Student version of Office for Mac 2004. Does such a version exist?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> In the 2004 release of Microsoft Office for the Mac, this low-priced version had a different name: the Student and Teacher edition. Microsoft presumably changed the name of this $150 product to the Home and Student edition in both Office 2007 for Windows and Office 2008 for the Mac, because, while it was technically limited for sale to families containing students or teachers, no proof was required and it was widely purchased by consumers in general.</p>
<p>However, there&#8217;s a big difference between the latest Windows and Mac versions of the Home and Student edition. In the Mac version, it includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage, Microsoft&#8217;s equivalent of Outlook on the Mac, which, like Outlook, includes email, calendar and contact functions. But the new Windows version now omits Outlook, and instead substitutes OneNote, a note-taking and information organizing program that is far less commonly used. So, Windows users must spend much more money to get a version of Office that includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>Is there a way to back up Microsoft Outlook Express emails, particularly Inbox items?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Outlook Express stores your emails in database files, with all the messages in each of your mail folders lumped into a single such file. These files can be backed up, or copied, onto other hard disks, or storage media.</p>
<p>The email data files are usually buried in obscure subfolders in Windows. But you can locate them by clicking on the Tools menu, then Options. This will open a tabbed window. In this window, click on the tab called Maintenance, then the button called Store Folder. This will generally give you a long, complicated path to the folder.</p>
<p>Next, copy this path by selecting it and pressing Control and C. Then, click on the Start menu, select &#8220;Run&#8230;&#8221;, and then press Control and V and then click OK. This should open the folder that contains your email. The inbox is contained in a file called Inbox.dbx. This is the file you will want to back up. If you want to back up other folders, such as the Sent mail folder, you will find them along with the inbox file, with the same &#8220;.dbx&#8221; suffix.</p>
<p>Some backup programs may automate this process by simply allowing you to designate that you want to back up your Outlook Express emails. There are even some programs specially designed to back up Outlook Express messages. You can find some of these by simply performing a Web search on &#8220;backup Outlook Express.&#8221;</p>

<p class="question"> <em>I couldn&#8217;t find any columns on products you recommend for monitoring kids&#8217; Web access and installing parental controls. I recently purchased a new computer for my 9-year-old daughter. I want to make sure she can only access specific Web sites and I want to protect her from inappropriate spam and chatting.</em></p>
<p class="answer"> If you have a computer running one of the newer versions of Windows or the Macintosh operating system, I recommend using the extensive parental controls that are now built right into those operating systems. While you can never underestimate the ingenuity of computer-savvy kids, these built-in controls, if properly used, are generally harder to evade than the ones provided by third-party software.</p>
<p>I did recently review these built-in parental controls, which appear in Windows Vista, and in the Tiger and Leopard editions of the Mac&#8217;s OS X operating system. You can find that column at: <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20070614" rel="external">ptech.allthingsd.com/20070614</a>.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I want to switch to a Mac, but my life is on Microsoft Outlook, which is only available on Windows. Is there a simple way to convert all of this data to programs on the Mac?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> There is a $10 program that performs this task. It&#8217;s called O2M (Outlook to Mac) and is from a company called Little Machines. It can be downloaded at <a href="http://littlemachines.com" rel="external">littlemachines.com</a>, where you also will find details about the Mac programs with which it works. This is a Windows program, which transfers your Outlook data into files you copy to your Mac. You then manually import these files into your Mac programs.</p>
<p>According to the company, the program exports Outlook email, email attachments, contacts and calendar appointments and allows you to import this data into Apple&#8217;s built-in email, address book and calendar programs, as well as into Microsoft Entourage, and other third-party programs.</p>
<p>Another approach is to install Windows on your Mac, and keep running Outlook. If you do this using the Parallels or Fusion virtualization programs ($80 each, plus the cost of Windows,) you can run Outlook simultaneously with your Mac programs.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>Does the new version of Microsoft Office for the Mac work on pre-Intel Mac models?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Microsoft says it does, though I didn&#8217;t test it on one of these older machines. According to Microsoft, the new Office 2008 runs on any Mac &#8220;with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (500 MHz or faster) processor.&#8221; However, you also need a relatively recent version of the Mac operating system, either the new Leopard edition, or the latest update (called 10.4.9) of the Tiger edition.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here are a few questions I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I have a 3-year-old PC, which has a single physical hard disk divided into a small C drive that is almost full and a larger D drive that has lots of empty space. I know I can move stuff from C to D, but how can I either merge these hard drives or somehow make D the automatic destination for files I download?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> You can merge the drives into one larger C drive, or redistribute space between them, by using what&#8217;s called a disk-partitioning utility &#8212; a program that rearranges the space on the hard disk without erasing your files. One I have tested and found that works well is called Partition Magic and is sold by Symantec.</p>
<p>Short of doing that, you can change the settings in programs you use to download or save files so that they store the files on your roomier D drive. Not every program has such a setting, but many do. These settings are usually found in the options or preferences sections of the software. For instance, in the latest version of the Firefox Web browser, go to the Tools menu, select &#8220;Options,&#8221; and, under &#8220;Main,&#8221; in the Downloads section, you can specify a folder on your D drive where it says &#8220;Save files to.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"> <em>In your review of the Amazon Kindle e-book reader, you praised its ease of downloading books, but criticized the hardware design. You seemed to prefer the design of the Sony Reader, which costs $100 less, but said it offers fewer books. If you had to choose between them, which would you pick?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Neither is a compelling product. However, putting aside price as an issue, I would choose the Kindle, despite its design problems. The Sony is slimmer, sturdier and, unlike the Kindle, it isn&#8217;t prone to accidental button-pushing. But Amazon&#8217;s device can download books directly, without the need for a PC. Sony&#8217;s can&#8217;t. And Kindle&#8217;s online catalog of compatible titles is 90,000 books, more than triple the number Sony offers.</p>
<p>Unless you absolutely crave an e-book reader now, I&#8217;d suggest waiting for a system that&#8217;s better than either. However, if you&#8217;re going to invest $300 or $400 now in a device to read electronic books, you would likely want the one with the widest selection of titles and the quickest, easiest downloading process. And that&#8217;s the Kindle.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I use Outlook Express for my email. I have been getting a lot of offensive junk mail I&#8217;d rather not even view for a moment. Is there a way to delete incoming mail in Outlook Express without having to first view the contents?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> You can avoid automatically viewing the contents of your email in Outlook Express, and many other email programs, by turning off the preview feature. In Outlook Express, click on the View menu, then select &#8220;Layout&#8230;&#8221;, and uncheck &#8220;Show Preview Pane.&#8221; Then, click OK. After that, you will have to manually open each message to view its contents.</p>
<p>However, you may have to open some emails anyway in order to decide whether to delete them, since spammers often use deceptive sender names and subject lines that make it hard to decide if they are worthy of deletion. So, you might consider installing an antispam program.</p>

This week my mailbox contained questions about creating files with the latest version of Microsoft Office that users of older versions can use, moving Outlook contacts to a Macintosh program and reinstalling Windows XP.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>On two different new computers, I&#8217;ve created Word files and they&#8217;re automatically saved with the extension &#8220;.docx.&#8221; What is that? When I send these files via email, no one can open them. Can you shed some light?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> In the 2007 version of Microsoft Office for Windows, which you appear to have on your two new PCs, Microsoft introduced new default file formats whose extensions end in the letter &#8220;x&#8221;. The one for Word is &#8220;docx,&#8221; for Excel it&#8217;s &#8220;xlsx&#8221; and for PowerPoint it&#8217;s &#8220;pptx.&#8221; You are using Word 2007, and all of your files are thus automatically being saved in the &#8220;docx&#8221; format.</p>
<p>Your correspondents can&#8217;t open these files because they are using older versions of Office that don&#8217;t recognize the new formats. Microsoft has made available a free auto-conversion patch for the older Windows Office versions, but most people don&#8217;t have this patch. (It can be found at <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads" rel="external">microsoft.com/downloads</a> under &#8220;Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.&#8221;)</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also a kludgy free stand-alone converter from Microsoft for the Mac versions of Word and PowerPoint, available at <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/mac" rel="external">microsoft.com/mac</a> under the name &#8220;Microsoft Office Open XML File Format Converter for Mac.&#8221;</p>
<p>Unless you can persuade all of your correspondents to install these workarounds, I suggest you change a setting in Word 2007 so that, henceforth, all of your files will be saved in the traditional &#8220;doc&#8221; format. That familiar format isn&#8217;t only compatible with older versions of Microsoft Office, but with many other programs, on both Windows and the Macintosh.</p>
<p>To make the change, first click on the round &#8220;Office Button&#8221; at the top left of Word 2007. Then, at the lower right of the window that appears, click on &#8220;Word Options.&#8221; In the next screen that comes up, click on &#8220;Save&#8221; in the column at the left. In the panel that appears at the right, you&#8217;ll notice an option called &#8220;Save Files in this format,&#8221; with a drop-down list of choices next to it. Display the list of choices by clicking on the arrow and select &#8220;Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)&#8221;. Then, click OK at the bottom of the window.</p>
<p>Microsoft warns that some new features in Word 2007 won&#8217;t translate into the old format, but I believe that this will prove irrelevant in 99% of cases and is outweighed in any case by the incompatibility you have run into.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>How can I transfer all my Outlook contacts from a Windows PC to a Macintosh contacts program?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> There are a number of methods. You can use a PDA or smart phone that can synchronize the contacts with a Mac, after having first synchronized with Outlook on your PC. Or you can use a $10 program called O2M, which is specifically designed to move Outlook data to a variety of Mac programs. It can be downloaded at <a href="http://www.littlemachines.com" rel="external">littlemachines.com</a>.</p>
<p>Or you could get Apple to do it. The company offers a basic file transfer for free if you buy the Mac from an Apple retail store. But, if you want Apple to move Outlook contacts in just the way you want, you may have to purchase the company&#8217;s $99 a year ProCare service, which comes with a more complete transfer service.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I recently replaced an old Windows XP computer that was running very slowly. I want to continue to use it as the computer for our young kids, and I was thinking that if I format the hard drive and reinstall XP (which I bought to upgrade the machine a while back), it will probably improve its performance. Do you agree? And, can I reinstall my copy of XP, when I have already &#8220;activated&#8221; the software when I originally installed it?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> I do agree that the computer will likely run faster after you wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows. That is the usual outcome. And it should be possible to use it legally, as long as you haven&#8217;t made any major changes to the hardware, since Microsoft&#8217;s activation system typically allows Windows to be reinstalled on the same machine. If activation fails, you can call Microsoft and explain that it&#8217;s the same machine, and the company says it will usually OK activation in such cases.</p>

<p>Here are a few questions about computers I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability. This week my mailbox contained questions about using Microsoft programs on the Apple iPhone, dividing software between a Mac and a PC and finding a video-conferencing service compatible with both operating systems.</p>

<p class="question">Will the new Apple iPhone be able to open and edit Microsoft Word documents? Will it be able to synchronize calendar and contact entries with Microsoft Outlook?</p>
<p class="answer">These and many other questions I received about the iPhone are good ones. But they can&#8217;t be answered yet. The iPhone won&#8217;t be on the market until June, and its software isn&#8217;t complete. Apple did say the phone would be able to synchronize calendar and contact entries with Windows computers, but didn&#8217;t specify which Windows programs would be supported. As for Word documents, Apple said nothing about this, but I wouldn&#8217;t rule it out. And remember, as with the iPod, the iPhone will be upgradeable with new features through Apple&#8217;s iTunes program.</p>
<p class="question">I am a Windows user who would like to buy a Macintosh but still keep my PC and work in both systems. Is there any way to avoid bankrupting myself by buying the same software on both systems?</p>
<p class="answer">Sure. Just use the machines for different purposes, and keep each stocked only with the software for those purposes. For instance, because it suffers from essentially no viruses and spyware, you might use the Mac for Web surfing and emailing &#8212; through its excellent built-in software &#8212; and dedicate the older Windows machine to software that&#8217;s available only on Windows, or where the Windows version beats the Mac version, such as Quicken.</p>
<p>The Mac comes with a much richer collection of bundled software than a typical Windows PC does. For instance, its included iLife suite includes photo, video, music, Web-site creation and DVD-burning software that are hard to match on Windows, even if you spend extra. The new Windows Vista closes this gap some, but not completely. And the Mac has lots of nice little touches. For instance, without any additional software, a Mac can save any document or Web page as an Adobe PDF file, readable by any computer.</p>
<p>On the other hand, Windows offers many more niche or specialty programs, such as small-business software, and programs such as WordPerfect and Microsoft Access that some businesses and professional firms rely upon. And Windows kills the Mac on games.</p>
<p>The only software you might need to replicate on both platforms is Microsoft Office, which comes in versions for both. You can buy the Mac version for about $150.</p>
<p class="question">I have just become a grandmother, but my granddaughter is a continent away. I would love to use Web cams to watch my granddaughter grow up, but my computer uses Windows and my daughter uses an Apple. Any suggestions for a video service that is compatible with the two systems?</p>
