Yes, you can use 2nd gen ipod touch as a phone. THe earbuds that come with it do not have a microphone, but apple sells earbuds that do for around $30.

The 2nd gen iPod Touch does not have a built-in mic, but it can make use of an external mic, including the one in the iPhone’s earbuds, similar third party earbuds, and some third-party plug in mics.

I have the 2nd gen iPod touch and unless I completely missed something, it does not have a microphone. However, it does have speakers. How would one make calls, Skype or otherwise, if there’s no microphone or input mechanism?

There’s now a Skype application for the iPhone which also works with the iPod touch.
So if you have a new Touch, WiFi reception and an appropriate headset you can make calls via Skype.

Walt, I believe that the 2nd generation iPod Touch does have a microphone, and thus will be able to record voice notes when OS 3.0 comes out in June.
