re: DVD player and the 2009 changeover- let's not complicate things unnecessarily! Your DVD player does not interact with your TV's tuner at all, it is a separate signal. So there should be no conflict at all. Whatever analog port you have your DVD player hooked up to now is NOT designed to receive a broadcast signal from a converter box or anything else. Any converter box will be attached through your antenna/cable connection. This is a non-issue.

Your VCR might be another story, since it does have a tuner and does interact with your TV's tuner- I assume , like with cable or antenna, you would have to hook the converter box to the VCR, then pass the signals through to your TV.

Walt, may I humbly suggest that you write a blog or PT column on the changeover, and on the concept of digital TV in general. I can't tell you how many near-fraudulent advertisements I have seen from cable and satellite vendors which seem to imply that the ONLY way to get HD into your HDTV is through them- "If it's not X, it's not HD!" - as if there's no such thing as over-the-air digital broadcasts. I don't think people are generally aware that all of their local channels are already broadcasting in digital, much of it HD, free for the taking, with an HDTV and a set of rabbit ears.
