Walt, As I type this, I'm using the Novatel broadband modem (via Verizon). A jewel on the MacBook Pro (OS X 10.4.9)... zero installation, plugged it in, it registered itself, and it works. In the 50 cities where the Rev A networks exist (like now in Wash DC), it's fast.

FYI, at our company we also have a lot of people successfully using the Blackberry 8800 via Bluetooth... 450kbps up in Canada recently, but about 120kbps in Austin, so highly variable results with that option (using T-Mobile). It's also a breeze to set up on the MacBook and MacBook Pros.
